In Panaji, the fisheries department is set to launch an innovative program aimed at modernizing fish sales in Goa by introducing electric fishing vehicles (EVs). These three-wheeler EVs are powered by both solar energy and electricity, ensuring an environmentally friendly operation. Equipped with refrigerated compartments to preserve freshness, the EVs will feature a mobile sales platform for offering a variety of seafood products. The department official highlighted that this initiative represents the first EV dedicated to fish sales in the region, offering the flexibility to sell both raw and fried fish to meet diverse consumer preferences.
Plans are underway for interested entrepreneurs to apply to operate these EVs, with encouragement for fish vendors and farmers to explore this new business opportunity. Initially, ten vehicles will be launched, with a further 40 expected to join later in the year as part of efforts to support local fish vendors and improve the seafood supply chain in Goa. The unveiling of these EVs is scheduled for the Narali Poornima celebrations, a traditional festival observed by fishing communities along the Indian coast, including Goa, to express gratitude to the sea and seek protection, marking the beginning of the fishing season in the state.
